The current authorisation process for putting rail vehicles into service according to Technical Specifications for Interoperability (TSI) and national safety rules is very long and costly.

Therefore the EUREMCO project – a collaborative R&D three-year project co-funded by the European commission under its 7th Framework Programme, conducted under the coordination of UNIFE (The European Rail Industry Association) – that concluded in late 2014, has considered a range of ideas that should help to speed things up and drive down costs by making proposals to harmonise and reduce the certification process of rail vehicles against Electromagnetic Compatibility.

The main concept of the project was indeed to specify the conditions for cross-accepted certification all around Europe, through sound scientific methodologies that allow for the identification of the “transfer functions” to be applied to results obtained on different test tracks in different countries, for the same power supply system.

To ensure the results of the project are widely disseminated and all concerned end users are reached, a deliverable containing the final EUREMCO proposal will be published in the coming weeks. As part of its contribution to the project’s dissemination, UIC will ensure that this document containing EUREMCO’s general conclusion regarding regulatory acceptance of the project’s outcomes is distributed to all relevant working groups, technical forums and platforms.
