Mr Ömer Yildiz, who until recently held the position of Director General and Member of the Board at Istanbul Transport Corporation (Istanbul Ulasim A.S.) was appointed Chairman of the Board and Director General of Turkish State Railways (TCDD) as of 6 March 2015, replacing Mr Mehmet Hamdi Yildirim, who held the position as Acting Director General.
Mr Yildirim was appointed Acting Director General of TCDD, succeeding Mr Süleyman Karaman, who held this position for many years and resigned in view of the upcoming elections in Turkey. Mr Yildirim continues to hold his position as Deputy Undersecretary at the Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications of Turkey.
Mr Ömer Yildiz was born in 1960 in Trabzon. He graduated in 1982 from the Aircraft Engineering Department within the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of Istanbul Technical University. He then completed his postgraduate degree and doctorate at the Aerospace Engineering Department at Michigan University in the USA. Back to Turkey he worked at the Faculty of Aeronautics and Astronautics in Istanbul Technical University between 1994 and 1997. He took over a new responsibility as Deputy Director General at Istanbul Transport Corporation from 1997 – 2005. From 2005 – 2007, he continued his career as Deputy Director General of ISBAK Inc. (Istanbul Transportation, Telecommunications and Security Technologies Industry and Trade Inc.), an affiliate company of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality.
Appointed again at Istanbul Transport Corporation as Director General, Mr Ömer Yildiz continued in his role until March 2015, when he was appointed to the head of Turkish Railways TCDD.
On the occasion of this appointment, UIC members and the Headquarters team express their warmest thanks and gratitude to Mr Süleyman Karaman for his action and personal commitment over the many years in the framework of UIC as an active member, a member of the Executive Board and the Chairman of the UIC Middle-East Region (RAME) since its establishment in 2007.
UIC also expresses most sincere congratulations to Mr Ömer Yildiz on his appointment as the new Director General and President of the Board of TCDD and looks forward to the further development of fruitful cooperation between UIC and TCDD for the benefit of all members in the Region.
