“Gare du Nord is a railway station built in the 19th century and which has failed to impress during the 20th century. We aim to ensure that the station will meet 21st century standards”, explained Guillaume Pepy on 24 June during a presentation revealing plans to redevelop Gare du Nord by 2023. The press conference was attended by Anne Hildago, Mayor of Paris, Jean-Michel Wilmotte, the project’s architect, Patrick Ropert, Managing Director of SNCF’s Gare & Connexions division, and Rémi Féraud, Mayor of Paris’ 10th arrondissement.
The press conference, Gare du Nord 2015 – 2023 Transformations, which took place within the 150-year-old station at the end of June, revealed plans to redevelop the station and its surrounding area over the next eight years. The work will be carried out in two phases: the first is to be completed by 2018, while the second, requiring more extensive changes, is due to be completed in 2023. The 2018 – 2023 phase will focus on opening up the station to the rest of Paris and the promotion of the station being the main entry point into France.
2015:
- Refurbishing the RER intermodal transport area
- Renovating the RER B and D regional express platforms
- Art installation on platforms and image projection onto the façade of the station
2016:
- Opening of Thierry Marx brasserie
- Moving the Eurostar lounge to a mezzanine floor
- Improving access to the Eurostar terminal
- Reconfiguring an underground passage linking the station to rue de Maubeuge
2017:
- Installing new lighting in the Halles Hittorff
2017 – 2018:
- Renovating the concourse of the mainline departures/arrivals halls, improving the flow of passengers to other forms of transport
