Please take 15 minutes to fill in the survey. Your contribution is important as we hope that this work will result in key findings regarding strategies for retaining the best professionals in the rail industry!
One of the components of the UIC TALENT project is to find solutions to enable the rail industry to retain the best talents. Demographic changes of ageing workforces and difficulties in attracting new industry entrants could lead to serious shortages of skilled employees in the transport sector in the foreseeable future. This important issue should be considered in conjunction with the career aspirations of talented professionals so that organisational strategies can be developed to keep rail professionals engaged in their careers and specialised knowledge and skills retained by the industry.
Economic globalisation and reform of the rail transport systems create new requirements for workforce development in all organisations. Railway undertakings need people to be able to operate on the global stage and to collaborate across functions as well as cultures.
Amongst the possible tools that UIC can set up at the international level to respond to these new requirements created by the increasing connectedness of railways are the:
- Establishment of an international network of rail professionals (TALENT network) to facilitate the sharing of knowledge and experience, as well as to stimulate the active dialogue between cultures and generations
- Development of appropriate international training/management development schemes (training sessions, collaborative and networking events, workshops…) for different target groups
- Identification of best practices across the whole industry
In the age of digitalisation, there are ways to support and address the diverse needs of all people currently working in the rail industry while meeting the workforce needs and skill requirements.
As a consequence, this survey has been developed to understand the aspirations of rail professionals considered to be in the mid-term of their career. The goal of the survey is to identify the factors influencing engagement with the rail industry and therefore, the skills and policies required by organisations to keep them continuously engaged.
The predominant age group of mid-term rail career professionals is usually between 40 and 50 years of age. However, if you are not in this age group, we would still like to hear your views through this survey, which is aimed at individuals not organisations. All data will be kept confidential including names of participants and the respective companies.
