UNECE Working Party on Rail Transport and UIC organised joint workshop on 24 November 2015 in Geneva

The UNECE Working Party on Rail Transport (SC.2) and UIC jointly organised a workshop on “Rail Safety: Trends and Challenges”, which took place on 24 November 2015 in Geneva.

Participants were welcomed by the Chairman of the UNECE WP SC.2, Krzystof Kulesza, Minister’s Counsellor in the Rail Transport Department of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Development in Poland and Konstantinos Alexopoulos, Economic Affairs Officer of the Transport Networks and Logistics Section of UNECE.
About 50 participants of 25 countries attended the workshop.

At the beginning of the meeting Peter Gerhardt gave a presentation about UIC’s Safety Unit activities. Participants discussed the following items in four sessions:

  • Asset Management
    Chaired by Marc Antoni, Director of the UIC Rail System Department
  • Human Factors
    Chaired by Christian Neveu, SNCF/Chairman of the UIC Human Factors WG
  • Risk Assessment – Statistics
    Chaired by Peter Gerhardt, Manager of the UIC Safety Unit
  • Technology
    Chaired by Marc Antoni, Director of the UIC Rail System Department

Subjects of presentations were:

  • The Rail Safety Case in Israel (Ministry of Transport and Road Safety, Israel)
  • CCTT practical activity in providing security of freight, transported by railway transport via Euro-Asian service (Coordinating Council on Trans-Siberian Transportation)
  • Asset management of signalling systems (UIC)
  • Human Factors and Signals Passed at Danger (RSSB/UK)
  • Railway Safety: Human Performance & performance of the system (SNCF)
  • Strategic Risk Management (Federal Office of Transport, Switzerland)
  • Rail Safety & the European Railway Safety Directive (EU, DG MOVE)
  • Safety Management System in Turkish State Railways (TCDD, Turkey)
  • UIC Safety Database – learning from past accidents to avoid future accidents
  • Safety and Security of signaling systems (UIC)
  • Sharing common safety principles for guaranteeing safety and improving interoperability in an integrated international railway network (ANSF, Italy)

Participants agreed to continue this information exchange between representatives of the member states and the safety experts of railway companies.
