The International Scientific Conference of Railway Research Institutes backed by its “Railway Research Circles” took place in Trzebnica, near Wroclaw, Poland, from 7 – 9 June 2016 in conjunction with the 20th anniversary of the Railway Test Loop in Zmigrod.
The events were organised by the Polish Institute of Railway Research (IK) under the honorary patronage of the Polish Ministry of Infrastructure and Construction, the President of the Office for Railway Transport (UTK), the President of Polish State Railways SA and UIC.
The aim of the conference was to present the achievements of the IK and foreign rail research centres involved in testing and evaluation of innovative technologies and solutions in the area of rail transport with the use of specialised research polygons.
Railway circles are a unique research tool for experimental research in rail transport.
Research conducted on these objects followed by innovative solutions has had a direct impact on the safety and efficiency in the operation of infrastructure and rolling stock.
The conference was a platform for the exchange of views related to the issues of technological developments, innovations and organisational improvements.
The conference was attended by representatives of the seven out of eight world experimental testing rail facilities.
UIC was represented by Jean-Pierre Loubinoux, Director General and Jerzy Wisniewski, Director of the Fundamental Values Department. ERA and UNIFE representatives also attended the event.
During his opening speech, Jean-Pierre Loubinoux highlighted the active participation of PKP and IK to UIC’s work where research makes up a significant part. He recalled the heritage of UIC – through its permanently updated leaflets, i.e. railway technical specifications and newly developed international railway standards where the innovative solutions came to railways faster. UIC’s European and world wide recognition within these areas has greatly helped Members to benefit from the value of rail research results at the best price. Mr Loubinoux extended special gratitude to Mrs Cecylia Lachor, Vice President of PKP SA and to Andrzej Zurkowski – Director of the IK who organised the events bringing together high-level experts and guests.
On the next day of the event, Jerzy Wisniewski presented UIC’s rail research and development activity to the 130 registered participants. He underlined the growing role of the UIC membership, presented the new opportunities to strengthen relations with the EC and ERRAC and manufacturers – with the assistance of the recently refocused UIC working groups such as: Research & Innovation Coordination Group (RICG) and International Railway Research Board (IRRB).
