Digitalisation at SNCF began in 2000 with the creation of Voyages-sncf.com – now a leader in e-commerce in France. In 2008, the Voyages-sncf.com application became available for mobile phones, which resulted in over 50% of rail tickets being bought on online in 2016, while SNCF applications have been downloaded over 20 million times.
Today SNCF is one of the more active groups in terms of digital developments, thanks to the #digitalSNCF transformation programme and the creation of the 574 units (internal/external fab labs) dedicated to digital mobility, which serve a community of 3000 start-ups and 15,000 SNCF employees. SNCF has launched an active policy of big data management to speed up the digital relationship with customers (for example with its Wi-Fi programme onboard trains). SNCF has also launched an industrial internet programme to boost safety, the quality and predictability of the network, equipment and buildings.
SNCF will henceforth move to the next stage of its digital transformation by creating a branch encompassing the group’s digital, telecommunications and information system activities. This branch will be tasked in particular with implementing the #digitalSNCF programme throughout the group.
