A prototype of the TEM28 diesel shunting locomotive manufactured at the Bryansk Engineering Plant, which is part of ZAO Transmashholding, is undergoing comparative tests at the Penza Operational Locomotive Depot.

Experimental trips are planned in the Penza area, during which experts will evaluate the new locomotive’s technical capabilities and compare them with the earlier TEM18 model, which was also tested previously in Penza.

During the tests, which are being carried out under identical operating conditions, the efficiency of the diesel generator unit and oil and fuel consumption will be evaluated, as well as the locomotive’s technical reliability as a whole. In addition, the engineers will assess the locomotive’s new and more comfortable cab, which is air-conditioned and offers all-round visibility.

Tests of the new machine at Penza will be held over four months, during which the depot’s experts will analyse the operating parameters and test results and prepare a conclusion for the manufacturer. In addition, the manufacturer will train two engine drivers-cum-instructors from the depot in order to pass on the experience to their colleagues.

The full set of tests is due to be completed in October 2016.

The fleet of Russian Railways consists of more than 6,000 shunting locomotives. The Company actively participates in the development of reliable and modern rolling stock.

In accordance with the Company’s fleet renewal strategy, the locomotives should incorporate improved technical characteristics and running costs, offer comfortable conditions for the locomotive crews, a high degree of energy efficiency and be environmentally friendly.
