Today the new EcoPassenger website dedicated to Asia-Pacific services was launched at http://ecopassenger-asia.org
This new website developed by the UIC Asia-Pacific Region, with the methodological support of the UIC Sustainable Development Unit, provides comparisons on the energy consumption and CO2 emissions from passenger journeys. This first version of the new tool produces results for China, India, Japan and South Korea and it is planned to be extended to other countries of the UIC Asia-Pacific Region in future updates.
The development of the tool has been possible thanks to the funding of the UIC Asia-Pacific members and especially the cooperation of the railways from the four mentioned countries, which have fed the tool with energy consumptions indicators of their networks and the main list of passenger services for every country, under the supervision of Gabriel Castañares Hernández, Senior Advisor on Energy and CO2 within the UIC Sustainable Development Unit.
This tool serves to extend the geographical scope of UIC ecopassenger-asia.org, creating an additional calculator to the existing one. The current Eco-tool for passenger services has provided environmental impact information linked to the timetable for Europe and Russia for over 10 years. The new beta version of the calculator for the Asia-Pacific region allows the UIC calculators for passenger services to produces results on environmental performance for four of the most relevant countries for rail transport at Asia-Pacific level.
The new tool uses a simple set of the methodology of EcoPassenger for the alternative modes compared to railways (cars and planes) and uses the data collected from members regarding the energy performance and the CO2 emissions including a Well-To-Wheel approach.
EcoPassenger gives users the opportunity to calculate their environmental footprint for each trip, disseminate awareness on personal decisions on global environmental impacts and compare other main competitor modes to rail.
UIC invites you to visit this new tool to check your emissions for Asia-Pacific trips at http://ecopassenger-asia.org. It is the first brick of a comprehensive web toolkit for UIC Asia-Pacific members in 2017.
