On 23 March The CP-Comboios de Portugal unveiled the first refurbished series 4000 Alfa Pendular tilting inter-city EMU at a ceremony that was attended by the Minister of Planning and Infrastructure at Lisbon Santa Apolonia Station.

The fleet of 10 Alfa Pendular car sets will undergo the same overhaul over the next two years, with the completion of the entire refurbishment programme scheduled for the end of 2019, for a total investment of approximately 18 million euros.

The Alfa Pendular has been in service since 1999, and since then the fleet of 10 car sets has transported more than 26 million customers and travelled over 45 million kilometres.
