Finland’s transport administration reforms took effect on 1 January 2019. The Finnish Transport Agency is now the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency (Väylä in Finnish).
The Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency focusses on planning, developing and maintaining Finland’s network of roads, railways and waterways. It is also responsible for coordinating transport and land use and for organising traffic control and winter navigation.
Responsibility for over 20 billion euro worth of transport infrastructure assets
Mr Kari Wihlman will continue in his role as Director General of the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency. The agency employs 400 experts directly, as well as over 12,000 people indirectly through investment projects, planning and maintenance. The agency has an annual budget of two billion euro and is responsible for transport infrastructure assets amounting to over 20 billion euro.
Collaboration on customer service
The Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency collaborates closely with various transport operators. On 1 January 2019, the Traffic Management Finland Group begins operations, with responsibility for traffic management across all transport modes. The new Finnish Transport and Communications Agency, Traficom, begins operations on the same date. Traficom is responsible for permits, certificates and supervision, amongst other things. Under the guidance of the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency, the regional centres for economic development, transport and the environment are responsible for ensuring smooth and safe transport on public roads and for maintenance in their respective areas.
