On 20 June, the e-pass will be promoted on conventional speed railways across China, covering over 1,300 such stations. Since then, the e-pass with ID-card will bring convenience to more passengers and further improve their travel experiences.
According to the passenger transport department of CR, the implementation of the e-pass is a significant move taken by the railway sector to continuously improve the passenger travel experience and further upgrade the passenger transport services under the people-oriented development principle and by means of IT and intelligent technologies. The e-pass was first piloted on Hainan Island-looping HSR from November 2018, then expanded to four high speed intercity railways including Shanghai-Nanjing, Chengdu-Chongqing, Guangzhou-Zhuhai (Zhanjiang West) and Kunming-Dali-Lijiang in July 2019, and then widely applied on HSRs and intercity railways across China from Q4 2019.
On 29 April 2020, the e-pass has been applied on all HSRs and intercity railways on the mainland. From the pilot of e-pass on Hainan Island-looping HSR to the end of May this year, 872 million such e-tickets have been sold for railways across China.
In its promotion period, facing the challenges in different periods, different railways, different regions and different scenarios such as the peak passenger flows in spring and summer travel rush, minor holidays and golden weeks, the e-pass system has shown excellent safety and stability and provided passengers with excellent experiences. During this period, rich technical reserves and practical experiences were accumulated for the e-pass system, which have laid a solid foundation for its implementation on conventional speed railways.
