The dynamic behaviour of loads on wagons is a complex topic dependent on multiple factors. However, computer simulations can be used to predict how a load will behave during transport and to present the potential risks.

What is the project about?

Goal: to develop a simulation tool to assess the safety and security of new or existing loading methods for railway freight transport.

Difficulty: traditional methods of verifying new loading procedures are time-consuming and resource intensive. This project aims to create a simulation based approach for risk assessment to make the process more efficient.

Why is this important?

The safe and secure transport of goods is crucial within the freight industry. Numerous factors such as, cargo type, wagon characteristics, and the rail line itself all affect loading safety. The current UIC Loading Guidelines provide various proven loading methods, but there is no standardised dynamic testing system for new loading procedures.

Solution: DynaLoad

This project will develop a tool that uses simulations to assess the dynamic behaviour of goods under various loading conditions. This will help ensure the safety and efficiency of implementing new or updating existing loading methods.

The project is divided into three main phases:

  • WP1 - Analysis and spec creation (state-of-the-art): this phase will calculate the required data (inputs, line parameters, etc.) and set up the boundaries and dynamic test conditions needed for the simulation tool.
  • WP2 - Simulation tool development: this phase focuses on building the simulation tool itself, following the requirements determined in WP1 and predicted user expectations. The tool will include a user-friendly interface for adjusting parameters, running simulations, selecting from model libraries, and generating automated reports.
  • WP3 - Risk assessment: this phase will find potential risks that could affect the project’s success and evaluate their severity. This assessment will guide project planning and management to minimise the risk of failure.
