Successful statutory meetings held from 9 – 11 December 2019 at UIC Paris

Focus on 2020-2022 strategic roadmap, digital, corridors, sustainability, standardisation, cooperation with third parties

Members of UIC come from all over the world to meet twice a year. From 9 – 11 December, members from all UIC regions (Africa, Asia-Pacific, Europe, Latin America, Middle East and North America) met at UIC headquarters in Paris to take stock of achievements in 2019 and to discuss the overall future strategy for the association and each of its regions.

The Executive Board and 95th General Assembly were chaired by UIC Chairman Mr Gianluigi Castelli, Chairman of Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane (FS), in the presence of Mr Ali İhsan Uygun, Director General of Turkish State Railways (TCDD) and Vice-Chairman of UIC and Mr François Davenne, UIC Director General. The chairs of each of the UIC regions also attended the meetings and presented their results for 2019 and strategic activities for 2020. Against the backdrop of the Memorandum of Understanding signed recently with the International Union of Public Transport (UITP), Mr Mohamed Mezghani, Secretary General of UITP, gave an inspiring keynote speech on strategies for decongesting city centres using the combined forces of railway and public transport.

Mr Gianluigi Castelli said: “Our shared values and common views on the future of transport have led to concrete results. Last year’s signature of the well-known UIC-UITP MoU has laid the foundations of a variety of initiatives in areas of shared interest – such as security, environment, digital, intermodal and accessible stations, regional and suburban transport services, skills development, workforce planning, and training. Indeed, UIC cherishes the importance of partnership and promotes cooperation with the largest variety of stakeholders in accordance with the UIC values of unity, solidarity and universality”.

Mr Castelli summarised the key outcomes from 2019, to be taken as a basis for the future, highlighting the first FRMCS conference organised this year, amongst others. The Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS), a successor to GSM-R, is a key enabler for rail transport digitalisation. Mr Castelli also highlighted the success of the Asia-Pacific Railway Innovations Forum held in May in Manila, the International Level Crossing Awareness Day (ILCAD) held in June in the Netherlands, the UIC Digital Days held in October in Paris, the UIC nextstation conference held in November in Tehran, and UIC’s participation in COP25 in Madrid at the beginning of December.

In terms of key activities, Mr Castelli underlined the importance of the digital transformation. He said: “It is therefore UIC’s mission and responsibility to fully unleash the potential of a “digital railway”. A digital, global railway that will be the priority and the strategic axis of our organisation, thus meeting current and future challenges of mobility development. This implies creating a virtuous circle among every possible stakeholder on a worldwide level. UIC is already committed in promoting research and innovation, enhancing our inclusiveness, encouraging dissemination and technological spillovers, and selecting the best practices among all of our associates”.

Presentation of the 2020-2022 strategic roadmap

Mr François Davenne presented the 2020-2022 strategic roadmap, a detailed programme of work structured around five key priorities:

  • Promotion of rail transport globally
  • Further development of UIC as a technical platform to address members’ needs
  • Creation of innovation through projects
  • Promotion of sustainable carbon-free transport
  • Efficient, transparent management for the benefit of UIC members

Mr Davenne said: “We need to increase transparency to make UIC the back office that provides solutions to the railway operating community. UIC should become an easy-to-use toolbox. We will also increase accountability. Our mission is to deliver tools for turning railways into the smart backbone of mobility. For this purpose, the quality of the International Railway Solutions (IRSs) we deliver to our members is a key issue.”

The strategic roadmap will also be used as a communications tool to share the UIC vision and areas of cooperation with the association’s stakeholders.

Mr Davenne also presented UIC as a potential career accelerator for experts employed by its members and underlined the vital importance of welcoming new experts from around the world to UIC for mutual enrichment and to ensure that the railways continue to perform well.

The General Assembly also served as an opportunity to present progress made in numerous areas. The second phase of the DIGIM project was presented in the context of digital technologies. The project is dedicated to the design and testing of blockchain as a service, with a pilot on a Eurasian freight corridor.

In the context of corridors, it was said that UIC is the right platform to represent the interests of the sector, and that the need to boost sustainable railway-based corridors is fundamental, given that rail is the most appropriate mode of transport for mobility of people and transport of large volumes of freight in a sustainable, safe, secure and time-efficient manner over very long trans-continental distances.

Regarding sustainability, UIC is promoting a highly ambitious low carbon rail transport challenge and rail climate responsibility pledge. This pledge is a renewal of the UIC Declaration on Sustainable Mobility, with a commitment to carbon neutrality by 2050 and reducing all members’ energy consumption and CO2 emissions. UIC strongly urges all of its members to sign the 2019 Pledge for the Railway Climate in order to reinforce the railways’ commitment and truly make a difference.

Regarding standardisation, the UIC members took stock of the progress of work to modernise UIC’s standardisation assets. All UIC leaflets are to be migrated to IRSs (International Railway Solutions) by the end of 2022.

With regard to cooperation with third parties, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed with the European Tourism Association (ETOA), recognising rail transport as a strategic partner for tourism to achieve sustainability goals.

A second MoU will be signed with the IATA (International Air Transport Association) in early 2020 in order to develop intermodality between transport modes.

Ms Edwige Cendres, Chief Accountant at SNCF, was appointed as Chair of the UIC Budget and Audit Commission.

Mr Vladimir Andreev of JSC RZD was appointed as Chair of the International Rail Research Board (IRRB). Mr Andreev will be supported by Prof. Mark Robinson (University of Newcastle), Mr Zhou Li (CARS), Mr Atila Keskin (TCDD), Mr Andrew Meier (ACRI) and Dr Andrzej Zurkowski (IK) as Vice-Chairs.

Finance

The General Assembly approved the 2020 budget.
Membership
Seven new members were welcomed by UIC at the General Assembly:

Asia-Pacific:

  • RAC (Indonesian rail authority) as affiliate member
  • Public Transport Authority of Western Australia as affiliate member
  • Philippines Department of Transport as affiliate member

Europe:

  • Jernhusen (owner, manager and developer of Sweden’s rail real estate) as affiliate member
  • ZPCG (passenger operator, Montenegro) as associate member

Middle East:

  • Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR) as active member

The next UIC General Assembly will be held in Beijing on 29 June 2020, just before the UIC World Congress on High-Speed Rail.

16th UIC African Regional Assembly held on 9 December 2019 at UIC Paris

The 16th Africa Regional Assembly took place at UIC HQ in Paris on 10 December within the framework of the annual UIC General Assembly.

The meeting was presided over by Mr François Davenne, UIC DG, Mr Said Chandid, ONCF and representative of Mr Khlie, ONCF DG and President of the UIC Africa Region, as well as Mr Thierry Béra, UIC CFO and Africa Region Coordinator.

The assembly went through the 2019 Africa Context and Realisations as well as the 2020 Action Plan and Development Perspective.

The subjects for discussion included the importance of IRS, the main themes of the year 2019 including: 1st Rail Digital Summit in South Africa, Railway Security and Safety (Crisis Management) in Gabon, and three events in Morocco: 5th World Training Congress, 2nd HSR Symposium, Financing of Railway Rolling Stock and two annual training sessions attended by 50 participants from 11 countries.

The Assembly went through the events planned for 2020 including the two training sessions, HR in the Digital Era (CTFM) in Morocco, 2nd African Rail Digital Conference in Tunisia, Management and Organisation of Railway Networks in Ethiopia, and Level Crossing Risks in Algeria.

There was also a suggestion to organise the UIC Information Days for the Africa Region in Morocco to provide a deeper overview on UIC activities and strategies for the Africa region.

24th UIC Regional Assembly for Middle East (UIC RAME) held on 10 December 2019 at UIC Paris

The 24th Meeting of the Regional Assembly for Middle-East Railways (RAME) was held on 10 December 2019 in Paris. The UIC RAME meetings are organised biannually in relation to the UIC General Assembly meetings with the presence of the top management of the member railways to discuss and decide on the activities of the region, reviewing and approving the previous programmes, presenting the report of the CEOs and Directors General of RAME, keeping up to date with regard to UIC HQ reports and activities, and being involved in them.

The 24th RAME meeting was opened by Mr François Davenne, Director-General of UIC. He extended his gratitude to the esteemed participants, especially to the RAME Chairman, Mr Ali Ihsan Uygun (TCDD), and Vice Chairman Mr Saeed Rasouli (RAI), and to Mr Abbas Nazari, Director of the UIC Middle-East Region Office (based in Tehran) for the preparation of the meeting. He emphasised the dynamism of the region and the need to develop more common concrete projects within UIC. In particular, he thanked RAI for organising the CEO meeting during the nextstation conference, which had provided an opportunity to discuss ways of boosting freight traffic not only in the RAME region, but also in neighboring countries in the APRA region.

In addition to Mr Davenne, Mr Uygun thanked UIC for their efforts in organising this important regional meeting. He explained that railway investments were growing in the region and that we should be confident in the coming projects, especially with the cooperation of the UIC Regional Coordination and the regional office in Tehran. Following this, Mr Rasouli, explained how cooperation with UIC is crucial for increasing the power of our railways and facing the regional challenges, but also to develop action plans and working groups within the region.

Ms Rahbari, Foreign Relations Expert within the UIC regional office in Iran, presented the report “Innovative Ideas on Rail Training” and how to develop training activities in the region. This presentation described the importance of training as well as how to develop technical skills and also leadership skills within a company, as well as delivering training in the era of digitisation and creating an innovation lab for a training centre.

Mr Wisniewski, UIC Coordinator for the Middle-East, presented an update of the Action Plan for 2020-2021 for approval. He encouraged Members to organise events on the promotion of safety at level crossings, seminars on freight and freight wagon technology, and also rail harmonisation, standardisation and interoperability. He insisted that it was also important to respond to the training needs of Members using the Mertce” (TCDD training facilities) in relation to UIC activities in this field. The climate change crisis was also not to be forgotten and Mr Wisniewski encouraged Members to join the Low Carbon Rail Transport Challenge and to contribute to the 2019 UIC Pledge.

Mr Marc Guigon, UIC Director of Passenger Department, joined the meeting to present the passenger activities and to thank Members for the successful event that was Next Station in November in Iran. He emphasised the importance of investments to develop performing railway stations, including by reinforcing private and public partnerships (PPP). Two main areas of work for the passenger department also include digitisation and sustainable development.

Sandra Gehenot, UIC Director of Freight Department, reported during the meeting on international freight corridors and freight wagon technology. She insisted on the need to develop more insightful regional work to encourage interoperability and to create a digital roadmap for freight in the Middle-East.

Mr Bera, UIC Finance Director, presented the report on the RAME budget and financial issues. He appealed to the RAME Members to ensure that their fee payments were made on time. UIC, RAME Members and the regional office also discussed Members having difficulties in attending the RAME meetings and how to support them in the best way possible.

To conclude the meeting, all Members represented were invited to report on their respective projects and achievements giving an overview of their activities.
The next 25th RAME meeting is scheduled to be held in Istanbul, Turkey in May 2020 – to be confirmed.

European Management Committee & Regional Assembly Europe met on 10 December 2019 at UIC Paris

Gathering together the 120 member companies of the UIC’s European Region, the European Management Committee (EMC) and the Assembly (RAE) met on 10 December to consider a number of deliverables for the year to end and the headlines of the plan of action for the year to come.

The mandate of the current College comes to an end on 31 December. The EMC reviewed the list of candidates received and, on the basis of the proposition place before them agreed the follow list for the period 2020 & 2021:

The EMC also approved the region’s budget for the forthcoming year and, as is traditional, forwarded their recommendation to the RAE for ratification.
The EMC reviewed the report that the chairman would make to the General Assembly the following day and noted with pleasure the headlines of the deliverables that the region has accomplished.

In their meeting, the RAE agreed the budget for next year, endorsed the EMC College and considered the overview of the output in 2019. This included:

  • Publication of the 2019 edition of the Railway Technical Strategy Europe (RTSE)
  • Established a number of environmental priorities that were promoted at the COP 25 in Madrid – green, clean and efficient is a unique selling point (USP) for railway transportation and why rail is the backbone of sustainable transport and mobility as a service
  • Support to ERRAC for publication of their research priorities for 2030
  • Continued to develop a strong ROC influence for Shift2Rail 2 – ensuring use of the 12 capabilities. UIC engaged in a number of projects within the current Shift2Rail open call programme
  • Strengthening the relationships with CER and EIM. The UIC is the technical support for the ROC, whilst CER and EIM are the political lobbyists for their respective stakeholders
  • Positioning the ROC in respect to the future development of railway standardisation in Europe. COM now preparing the necessary text (UIC is involved) that will mean they are issuing future requests for standards in support of the TSIs. Not everything can be done by CEN_CENELEC and there is recognition that ‘others’ (including the UIC) will need to be involved. This is especially true for operations and maintenance/safety topics
  • The UIC’s European Work Programme 2020 shows a positive trend in the number of topics being selected for development – the links with the RTSE and support for development at European level are noticeable
  • Restructuring of the regional Terms of Reference – the way we work

There was considerable recognition for the work done by the outgoing EMC College and a big welcome to those who will sit at the table for the next two years.

Looking forward, the RAE endorsed the outline plan of action:

  • RTSE 2021 – work will start on this in 2020
  • Engagement of UIC in the 2020 S2R open call programme
  • Continue to influence a strong role for the ROC in S2R2
  • Reshaping the UIC’s European Work Programme of innovation projects in in order to speed up the approvals and funding processes
  • Development of the framework within which IRS published by the UIC can be recognised as Accepted Means of Conformity (AMoCs) with the TSIs
  • Forge links with external players such as NSAs to better position the role of the UIC in the standardisation field
  • Positioning UIC as a player in the development of sector-specific standards at European level

The EMC will next be meeting in March 2020 in order to support the development of all of these topics.

5th UIC Digital Conference held on 10 December 2019 at UIC Paris

On 10 December UIC held its 5th Digital Conference.
This event is now a tradition to “share, to open and to connect” with all actors of the worldwide digital eco-system.

The Conference was opened by François Davenne, UIC Director General. He said that “thanks to a digital attitude put at the heart of the system, we will have the opportunity to use a large amount of data in order to change the rail services.”

Gianluigi Castelli, UIC Chairman and FS Chairman, then delivered a keynote speech. He particularly stressed “the awareness needed for a positive digital mindset in the industry and the importance of using the right competencies for the right technologies.”

Two speakers presented their latest achievements and projects.
The first one was a UIC Member: SNCF
Loïc Hamelin and Giuliana Barbarino – SNCF DGEX Solutions delivered a presentation on “Open software: enhancing operations.”

The second speaker was Bill Nie – CEO of FATRI, a Chinese Company, a new key actor in the digital domain and he addressed the topic "What about Quantum Sensing in the new Smart City Transportation paradigm?”

Francis Bédel – UIC Chief Digital Officer, then had the opportunity to give a rapid review of the UIC Digital Platform’s 2019 activities and he presented a draft roadmap for 2020 highlighting the major planned events:

  • 2nd African Digital Rail Summit (Tunis: April 2020)
  • Australian Digital Conference (Perth: 14 – 15 May 2020)
  • Participation in World Highspeed Congress (Beijing: 30 June – 3 July)
  • 6th Digital Conference (December 2020)

He mentioned the two major projects of the DIGIM programme:

  • DIGIM II dedicated to Connected Level Crossings. Designed in cooperation with Dassault Systems
  • DIGIM III dedicated to the design of pilot on “Block Chain as a service” for Euro-Asia Rail Freight Corridor

UIC Digital Awards 2019

Once more, the 2019 edition was a huge success with several dozen start-ups from all over the world that had submitted their projects.
Four of them were selected and presented with an award during a friendly celebration ceremony.

CARBODIN kick-off meeting held from 11 – 12 December 2019 at Fundació EURECAT in Barcelona

The kick-off meeting for the Shift2Rail JU funded project, CARBODIN, was held at Fundació EURECAT premises from 11 – 12 December 2019 in Cerdanyola (Barcelona).

CARBODIN (Car Body Shells, Doors and Interiors) is a €3.5 million project led by Fundació EURECAT (Spain) in collaboration with 13 other European partners from seven different countries representing a balanced combination of academia, industry (including Small and Medium-sized Enterprises), associations and research i.e.:

The main goal of this 24-month project starting in December 2019 is to develop innovative and affordable solutions for advanced car body shells manufacturing and lightweight material strategies for railways, innovative doors and train modularity, contributing to S2R IP1 strategy. By this, CARBODIN will highly contribute to the next generation of passenger trains that will be lighter and more energy and cost efficient than the current ones.

More specifically, this project will aim at finding solutions for:

Car Body Shells: efforts will focus on the development of smart, automated, modular and cost-efficient mould processes for car body shell manufacturing based on Out of Autoclave (OOA) processes. Besides, the development of structural health monitoring (SHM) systems for car body shell, multi-material and 3D printed parts and tools will help to produce lightweight and high reliability parts.

Doors: efforts will concentrate on the development of manufacturing tools for composites with the aim at cost reduction. Moreover, technologies for improving the comfort at the door neighbourhood will be developed, ensuring thermal and acoustic insulation, and accessibility solutions.

Interiors: solutions will be developed to allow modular and aesthetic interior designs and layouts at low cost and in a short amount of time, to identify new human-machine interactions for the cabin of the future, and to integrate low volt circuits in panels.

The meeting started with an overview of the CARBODIN project given by its coordinator (Víctor García Fernández from Fundació EURECAT) and by Laura Piani, Shift2Rail JU programme manager, who presented the Shift2Rail JU programme and how CARBODIN fits into this context.

All the partners of the consortium then presented their work plan for the next two years. And separate meetings were organised to prepare the work for the coming months.

Several partners of CARBODIN’s complementary project, PIVOT2 (Performance improvement for vehicles on track 2) also attended the Kick-off meeting to present their project and begin to study the synergies between both projects.

This project has received funding from the Shift2Rail JU under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme, under Grant Agreement 881814.

Conference on « Low carbon mobility: making modal shift desirable » to be held on 13 February 2020 in Brussels

UIC actively promotes at international level a multimodal vision shared with public transport and supply chain stakeholders.

Based on its members’ expertise, UIC is developing the technical enablers to transform this concept into reality. In order to share the initiatives already taken and to find the ways to make modal shift desirable, UIC is pleased to invite you to a one-day conference on 13 February 2020 in Brussels. It will also be an occasion rediscover an unexpected advantage inherent to railway, the virtue of frugality.

Among thr speakers delivering a keynote speech, Mr Umberto Guida, Senior Director for Knowledge & Innovation, UITP and Mr Bernard Soulage, Expert in urban planning have already confirmed their participation.

Among the speakers who will participate in the first round table, Mr Thomas Mohring and Ms Eva Dijkema, Policy Advisor Environment & Sustainability, ProRail and Mr Paul Hegge, Director Public Affairs & CSR, Lineas, will discuss the theme “Moving towards low carbon mobility: the initiatives already taken.”

The second round table will give the possibility to learn more about “How to make modal shift desirable: Rediscovering the virtue of frugality.”

The event will be held Square conference centre in Brussels, and will end with a networking drinks reception. Speakers from international organisations, as well as from Japan, Morocco and Russia also intend to participate.

MERITS Workshop to be held on 23 January 2020 (2-5 pm) at UIC Paris – free of charge

Dedicated to data users and data providers

UIC launched the new MERITS [1] framework in March 2019 in response to the sector’s expectations with regard to business, regulations and digital evolution. A new contractual framework has been put in place, based on the principle of non-discrimination and compliant with the principles of competition law. It provides precise legal definitions of the roles of data provider and data user (rights and terms of conditions). A product catalogue has been created and is now available on the UIC website. Commercialisation of MERITS licences has commenced.

After nine months of activity, UIC is now organising a workshop on MERITS with the aim of:

  • Better understanding the expectations of data providers and data users with regard to MERITS products, such as timetable data
  • Clarifying the legal identities and roles of the stakeholders involved in MERITS data exchange
  • Explaining the MERITS commercialisation process
  • providing details of MERITS data structures and the challenges involved in good data quality
  • Providing a status report on the results achieved
  • Brainstorming on the future development of MERITS

[1MERITS (Multiple East-West Railways Integrated Timetable Storage) is a database, owned by UIC, containing the integrated timetable data of many European and some non-European countries (Russia, Turkey, Belarus), comprising a few hundred railway undertakings (RUs).

MERITS is a B2B tool designed for railway distribution. Railway companies remain responsible for the manner in which their information and distribution channels are supplied, based on their own commercial strategies. EDIFACT is currently the only format used for importing and exporting data (SKDUPD and TSDUPD messages).

Call for Proposals: UIC Sustainable Development Unit Proposals Submission Tool for 2021

The UIC Sustainable Development Unit would like to collect ideas for future projects and activities starting from 2021. Selected ideas might be proposed as new opt-in projects.

Members are hereby invited to submit their proposals until 12 December 2019.

To participate in the “project proposal” process for following issues, please fill in the form through the website: https://bit.ly/2pTxt6n for the following topics:

  • Sustainable land use
  • Biodiversity
  • Circular economy
  • Adaptation
  • Emission & air quality
  • Energy & CO2

Results will be discussed during the upcoming meetings of each corresponding sectors. Proposed ideas might be put to vote after the proposal submission process. Ideas with the highest number of votes might be presented as new opt-in projects at the Programmes & Projects Workshop Day on 28 April 2020 at UIC.

Your proposal should include your interest in the particular research area and the topic you want to study. Please note that this will not be taken as a financial commitment from your company and yourself.

Multiple submissions from the same author/same company will be accepted.
If you plan to submit more than one proposal, please fill in a new form.

Germany: DB Schenker opens fully solar-powered logistics center in Dubai

33,000 m² logistics area • Warehouse building is entirely solar powered • Central logistics hub in the Middle East

DB Schenker opened on December 9, 2019 its first fully solarpowered logistics center in Dubai with an area of 33,000 m². The regional distribution center, DLC II, is located in the logistics area of Dubai South, in the immediate vicinity of Al Maktoum International Airport. DLC II will become the central regional logistics hub in the Middle East for DB Schenker’s customers, including Unilever: the main local partner and one of the world’s leading suppliers of home care, beauty & personal care, foods and refreshment products.

After a successful first collaboration in Saudi Arabia, DB Schenker and Unilever officially inaugurated the new mega-site in Dubai under the patronage of His Excellency Khalifa Al Zaffin (Executive Chairman, Dubai Aviation City Corporation and Dubai South). A high-ranking delegation from Unilever Global and North Africa & Middle East was present, as were Xavier Garijo (Member of the DB Schenker Board for Contract Logistics), Christopher Smith (CEO of DB Schenker MEA), Ako Djaf (Head of Contract Logistics / SCM for Middle East and Africa) and numerous other guests.

Xavier Garijo said: "The DLC II clearly demonstrates: We plan and act sustainably. This makes us one of the world’s leading logistics providers. We use resources in an ecologically sensible way in order to reduce CO2 emissions and costs. Sustainability is a competitive advantage for our customers and for us.” The construction of the logistics center in Dubai, which is powered entirely by solar energy, is part of a series of Eco Warehouses at DB Schenker. Further green warehouses are located in Singapore, Helsinki, Klagenfurt, Tilburg and Dortmund. In addition, DB Schenker’s warehouses are gradually being converted to LED lighting. The temperature-controlled new logistics center in Dubai offers space for a total of 90,000 Euro pallets in an area of 33,000 m² and has a 3,000 m² mezzanine for value-added services.

The logistics center’s service portfolio comprises warehousing including hazardous material storage, various value-added services, distribution and delivery services as well as ocean and air freight transport. The DLC II is located in one of the most important free trade zones in the region. Direct connections to Jebel Ali Port and Al Maktoum International Airport enable fast and uncomplicated transportation. With the completion of the DLC II, the second of three phases of the growth plan for the expansion of contract logistics in Dubai has been completed. By 2021, DB Schenker will have created logistics space with a total capacity of 80,000 m².

Sustainability in contract logistics
DB Schenker is committed to leading the way in environmental protection by becoming the leading green logistics services provider and supporting the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. In May 2019, DB Schenker opened its first low-carbon city distribution center in Norway, the new Oslo City Hub. DB Schenker’s newest terminals and city hubs throughout Europe are virtually climate-neutral and meet the latest energy efficiency requirements.

Czech Republic: Regular Passenger Transport Returns to Židlochovice after Forty Years

On Sunday 15 December, the first regular trains will run on the renewed railway line between Hrušovany u Brna and Židlochovice. Správa železniční dopravní cesty (SŽDC) carried out its complete reconstruction and electrification. This allows the introduction of direct trains from the regional capital. Passengers at Židlochovice Station will have at their disposal two new platforms; at Hrušovany u Brna, one centre and one external platform were built. All of them have a boarding edge at a standard height of 550 millimetres above the rail.

Operation on the three-kilometre long branch from the main line of Emperor Ferdinand’s Northern Railway was launched in 1895. It was built mainly to service the sugar factory in Židlochovice. Although passenger transport also played an important role during some periods, its importance steadily declined. And so, passenger transport ended in 1979 and freight transport was maintained until around the mid-1990s.

Židlochovice is part of some important transfer junctions within the integrated transport system of the South Moravia Region; that is why its leadership endeavoured to renew operation on the line to Hrušovany and to carry out all adaptations that would allow the introduction of a direct train connection to Brno. The project also included electrification and a necessary configuration change to the track layout at Hrušovany u Brna Station. The highest speed on the renewed line will be 80 kph.

The building site was handed over at the end of November 2018; following that, preparation works started including, for example, the dismantling of a rather well-preserved railway superstructure including tracks. At Židlochovice Station, two new external platforms 170 metres long were built. The platform at Track No 1 is a so-called edge-edge transfer to buses servicing the newly-built transfer terminal.
Two new platforms, also 170 metres long, were built at Hrušovany u Brna. More specifically, there is one centre platform and one external platform, situated in front of the passenger building. Access to the new centre platform is provided by stairs and a lift from the current underpass.

Two railway crossings were reconstructed as well as one pedestrian crossing. Safe operation is assured by new Category 3 signalling equipment, which has been adapted for remote control from the Traffic Control Centre at Přerov.
Technical and safety testing was carried out on the renewed line on 7 November. At present, final safety and signalling equipment is being installed. Construction work will continue until the end of next March. Some terrain adaptations, cleaning and completion works are still to be done.

The project for modernisation and electrification of the line Hrušovany u Brna – Židlochovice is co-financed by the EU under the Operational Transport Programme. Total estimated costs for the project come to CZK 832,470,216 (VAT excluded); the maximum EU support is up to 82.05% of the total eligible costs. National financing is provided by the State Fund for Transport Infrastructure.
