Back to better mobility : accelerating sustainable transport in the next decade of action

The International Union of Railways (UIC), International Association of Public Transport (UITP), UN Habitat and ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability are organising a Side Event in the framework of the second United Nations Global Sustainable Transport Conference that will take place from 14 to 16 October 2021 in Beijing, China.

Session Description :
With less than 10 years left to implement the 2030 Agenda, we must continue to regularly follow up and review progress on all the sustainable transport related Goals, as they remain the to-do list for people and planet and are the blueprint for success. We all have a role to play to make this happen and international collaboration is critical in driving forward the transformation of the transport sector.
In this context, the session will display current state of play linked to implementing sustainable transport SDG targets and present the key transformational plans for the 2020s in rail and urban sustainable transport sectors.
The session will also showcase forward-looking transport solutions, collaborative initiatives and innovations to accelerate COVID-19 recovery strategies to support achievement of SDGs 11.2 (expanding public transport) and 9.1 (developing quality, reliable, sustainable and resilient sustainable transport infrastructure).

Thematic : Sustainable transport and sustainable cities
The event will launch a joint UN Habitat and UITP detailing the latest global data and analysis of global progress against SDG target 11.2. The report’s main findings and recommendations to support improved implementation of Goal 11.2 will be presented.

Thematic : Policies for sustainable transport
The event will present voluntary initiatives and the role that the organising partners can play to strengthen the means SDG implementation, as targeted by Goal 17.

The diverse panel will come from local/national governments and rail/public transport authorities, operators, business leaders and renowned international organisations.
