The UIC FRMCS (Future Railway Mobile Communication System) working groups (Telecom On-Board Architecture, Functional, Architecture & Technology, UIC Group for Frequency Aspects and the 3GPP Task Force) held their plenary meeting virtually on 7 October to discuss the status of the FRMCS project. Around 50 experts from railway companies attended the plenary, along with representatives from ERA. The FRMCS specifications roadmap and ETCS over FRMCS principle architecture were presented at the meeting.
The main objective of UIC’s FRMCS activities is to work together with partners to develop an initial version of the FRMCS system with a view to beginning pilots at national level in the first half of 2025.
FRMCS is the future worldwide telecommunications system designed by UIC in close cooperation with the various stakeholders from the rail sector. As the successor to GSM-R, it is also a key enabler for rail control-command system digitalisation.
