The UIC Customer Experience Working Group (CEMP) will host an insightful online workshop online on 4 October 2024 dedicated to improving the integration of bikes and luggage on railway networks. This workshop will bring together industry leaders, mobility experts, and policymakers to explore current challenges and propose innovative solutions to improve the customer experience and sustainability.

As demand for sustainable travel options grows, the railways are increasingly being called upon to accommodate both cyclists and passengers travelling with luggage. The event aims to address critical issues such as balancing accessibility and capacity, ensuring customer satisfaction, and promoting sustainable mobility practices.

The workshop will kick off with an introduction to UIC’s ongoing efforts in this area, followed by keynote speeches from key figures in European transport policy, cycling advocacy, and rail innovation. These talks will set the stage by highlighting the latest trends, regulatory frameworks, and future possibilities in rail transport.

A central part of the event will focus on sharing practical case studies from railway companies across Europe that have successfully integrated bicycles and luggage into their services. Experts from Belgium’s SNCB, the Netherlands’ NS, Denmark’s DSB, and Switzerland’s SBB will present their innovative approaches, providing valuable insights on how different rail companies are addressing the dual demands of accessibility and capacity while ensuring a seamless customer experience.

In addition to showcasing best practices, the workshop will feature a panel discussion that delves deeper into the challenges of incorporating bikes and luggage on trains. Experts from the railway industry, urban mobility, and sustainable tourism will examine the complex relationship between passenger needs, infrastructure constraints, and environmental goals. The panel will also explore strategies for promoting sustainable tourism by making railways more accommodating for cyclists and passengers with luggage.

The event will conclude with a summary of the key takeaways and a look at future initiatives, offering attendees the opportunity to continue engaging with UIC’s work on customer experience.

This workshop is a must-attend for railway professionals, urban mobility planners, policymakers, and anyone passionate about sustainable travel solutions. Participants will not only gain a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities in bike and luggage management but also have the chance to network with leading experts in the field.
