2021 is a decisive year for the International Union of Railways Station Sector – Station Managers Global Group, which was restructured on 1 January. By reshaping the sector, UIC was able to respond to its members’ needs by establishing a plenary meeting comprising numerous station directors and high-level experts, a steering committee and four working groups: Station & Urban Design, Facility Management & Operation, Retail & Commercial Affairs and Small Stations.

The Global Passenger Forum – the decision-making body for all UIC passenger activity involving stations – took place on 10 February. Mr Carlos Ventura, Chair of the Sector and director of Spanish stations, officially announced at the meeting that he was to resign from his role.

Following a call for expression of interest and validation of applications by the Global Passenger Forum, we are pleased to announce that Mr Fabrice Morenon, Director General of the subsidiary tasked with international development at SNCF Gares & Connexions – Hubs & Connexion, has been appointed as the new Sector Chairman for a two-year period. Mr Morenon, a longstanding member of the sector, will be tasked with increasing the influence and reach of this activity at international level. “The SMGG is a club for all UIC members, and we are counting on your future engagement” .

UIC is also pleased to announce the appointment of Mr Paul Van Doninck, Strategist at Swedish state-owned company Jernhusen, as Vice-Chair of the Sector. His international experience beyond the railway sector will undoubtedly help the SMGG sector to expand its competences and areas of expertise. “Station management is in our DNA, and we believe in cooperation which is the key to our success”, says Mr Van Doninck.

On behalf of our 20 active members, we warmly thank Messrs Ventura, Morenon and Van Doninck once again for their past and future contributions, which are of such great importance for this activity sector.
