The new 5G-enabled Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS) telecommunications standard is due to be launched in 2025. The system is set to improve safety, passenger experience and operational efficiency, amongst other benefits. Once FRMCS is implemented, a priority for rail infrastructure managers will be to ensure uninterrupted coverage across their entire network. For long-distance networks, this will be most challenging in remote rural areas.
In response to this challenge, a debate on the topic of ”How can we ensure efficient FRMCS connectivity in rural areas?”, is being organised by IRS Rail Webinars, to be held on 30 June at 13.00-14.30 CEST.
The debate will focus on the best ways to ensure seamless connectivity and fulfil FRMCS’s promise of more data and faster communications. What role could bearer-independent communication (BIC) play in offering greater reliability, capacity and bandwidth?
Dan Mandoc, Head of FRMCS at UIC, which is designing and coordinating the system, will present the latest information on FRMCS rollout and implementation. The live audience will also hear contributions from telecommunications experts at the national rail infrastructure managers in Spain, France and Finland: Carlos Rincon Abel, Senior Telecommunications Manager, Adif, Eric Giraud-Desjuzeur, Director – PPP GSM-R & Radio Rail, SNCF Réseau, Markku Voutilainen, Senior Inspector, Engineering and Environment, Track and Rolling Stock Technology, Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency (FTIA), as well as Markus Myslivec, Head of Public Transport Solutions at Frequentis.
The debate will be moderated by Robert Sarfati, Chairman of UIC’s ERIG (European Railway Implementers for GSM-R) Group. Mr Sarfati is also Director Consultant at SYSTRA and Chairman of the Technical Committee on Rail Telecommunications at the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI).
