The 11th UIC World Congress on High-Speed Rail, took place in Marrakech, Morocco, from 7 to 10 March 2023. During this time, Christian Chavanel, UIC Rail System Director and Coordinator of the Africa region, organised a number of bilateral meetings with representatives of the African railway networks and authorities.
Chavanel and Maria Lafont, Senior Advisor for the African Region, met with SOPAFER-B (the Management Company for Railway Heritage in Burkino Faso), CFS (Senegalese Railways), SNCFG (the National Railway Company of Guinea) and ANIAM, RSR (the Railway Safety Regulator of South Africa), SNCFT (the National Railway Company of Tunisia) and CamRail from Cameroun, among others.
The meetings provided an opportunity for Chavanel, whose nomination as the coordinator of the region was announced during the congress, to meet with representatives from the African Railway Community, and discuss the key issues on the networks while laying out a future work programme.
