9th UIC-FIATA Market Place Seminar held on 4 June 2019 in Munich

Interaction between Railway Operators and Freight Forwarders

UIC and the International Freight Forwarders’ Association (FIATA) organised the 9th edition of the Market Place Seminar hosted by the transport and logistics fair on 4 June 2019 in Munich.

The Market Place Seminar is a platform which aims to create opportunities for increased cooperation and business development within the rail sector by offering a common platform for railway undertakings, freight forwarders and customers.

This year’s seminar principal theme was “Interaction between Railway Operators and Freight Forwarders.”

The seminar comprised two sessions, bringing together high-level speakers.

In the first session based on the new rail logistics concepts in multimodal transport the speakers shared with the audience case studies of success towards multimodality and why multimodality, partnerships and cooperation of the players of the chain are essential. Speakers provided insights into how the transport sector embraces innovative concepts and technologies to pursue the goal of achieving a sustainable, customer-oriented and efficient system.

Our invited speakers were:

Carlo Vaghi, from FIT Consulting presented the H2020 EU project Clusters 2.0. pt presentation
Niklas Galonske, from the Engineering Company HaCon, presented the new Rail Facilities Portal of the EU Commission.
Harald Jony, from Wiencont Container Terminal GmbH, presented the technical innovations implemented on the biggest Combined Transport Terminal in Austria.
Session 2 focused on how to make the best use of Rail Freight Corridor Services – Strengths and Opportunities for the market

In the second session the speakers engaged in panel discussions on the last mile and cross border capacity, first mile and last mile issues, the costs, the investment in last-mile infrastructures, development of medium and small sized terminals, logistic centres, re-routing in case of an emergency situation, and how to handle passenger and freight on one corridor.

The invited speakers were:

Emanuele Mastrodonato, Scan Med Corridor (Scandinavian-Mediterranean) Managing Director, presented the latest updates on the Scan Med Corridor
Sabine Parmentier, Head of Strategy of LINEAS, presented the Belgian company and its use of the Rail Freight Corridors in its business development
Bernd Weisweiler, TX Logistics, business development from railway and intermodal operator point of view on corridors
Zuhal Nalbant, DB Netz AG, Business development on corridors
Federica Montaresi, President of La Spezia Shunting Railways and ScanMed Terminal Advisory Group Speaker, Investments on last mile infrastructure.

This half day seminar ended with a networking event on the afternoon of 4 June that enabled the 60 registered participants to expand their business network.
