Train Rail Hackathon
As part of the activities of the UIC Talent and Expertise Development Platform (TEDP), the Train Rail Hackathon aims at developing a cooperative network of training organisations and industrial partners and attracting more talent to railway companies.
To ensure a truly global event, UIC is partnering with esteemed universities and organisations. The Hackathon is organised in three phases:
- Regional competitions: Asia-Pacific, Africa, Middle East, Latin America, Europe
- Final competition: on 08 April, as part of 7th World Congress on Rail Training (WCRT)
- Hackathon Award: during the 12th UIC World Congress on High–Speed Rail (WCHSR)
The Hackathon is open to:
- Students currently enrolled at universities or colleges within the corresponding region.
- Employees working for railway enterprises in the rail sector.
Eligibility Requirements:
- All applicants must be of legal age in their respective regions.
- Participants should sign in by teams/individual, with a maximum of 3-5 participants per team.
- Participants can only be part of one team.
- Active participation is mandatory throughout the competition, including the launch, development phase, and final project presentation to the Jury.
Project Eligibility:
Eligible candidates can submit an initial project idea (topic) that they intend to develop further during the Hackathon.
What is a Hackathon?
Hackathon is an event where a group of designers, engineers, programmers, etc. meets to develop new ideas, offer innovative solutions to practical industry problems and manufacture product prototypes. There will be exhibitions and communications organized on a given topic during the event.
Hackathon is an event where people from different backgrounds communicate and cooperate together in technological development. These activities can promote mutual learning of knowledge and technologies in other related fields. Rapid development activities are also conducive to improving the analysis, design and capacities of participants. The Hackathon is not a competition in the traditional sense, but rather a gathering of creative minds.

"Train the Trainers" sessions: 14 October 2024
Training sessions are scheduled in September 2024 for regional organisers and coaches.
Train Rail Hackathon 2024-2025
How to participate?
Teams of 4 to 5 people from rail networks and training and education organizations.
Registration in one of the selected regions: Asia-Pacific, Africa, Middle East, Latin America, Europe, etc.
Selection of projects by regional juries will go for the international final competition.
Regional Hackathon: November 2024
The form and period of competition will be decided by each regional organising committee. Winners of regional Hackathon will have the opportunity to present their project.
Hackathon Final Competition: 08 April 2025
The 2nd Train Rail Hackathon final will be held on 08 April 2025 in the framework of the WCRT 2025 at the Opening.
Hackathon Award: July 2025
During the 12th UIC World Congress on High–Speed Rail (WCHSR), the winning teams from the Hackathon will be celebrated and awarded.

The present regulations serve to define the terms of organisation and participation in the TrainRail Hackathon 2024-2025.
