Call for papers - ILCAD - 06 June 2024

International Level Crossing Awareness Day (ILCAD) 16th edition – June 6, 2024 Launch Conference (in English and Spanish), Buenos Aires, Argentina

Call for papers

Since June 2009 UIC the International Union of railways with the support of the railway community around the world has spearheaded the International Level Crossing Awareness Day (ILCAD), a worldwide initiative to improve awareness of level crossing safety.
About 50 countries usually take part in the ILCAD annual campaign.

Each year, a partner country hosts the launch event at which good practices and projects to improve safety and reduce the accident toll are shared.

This conference attracts railway industry representatives, road authorities, academics, and many others from around the world who are working to raise awareness about the dangers surrounding level crossings.

In 2022 (8-10 June) the 14th edition of ILCAD and the very first edition of TRESPAD were co-organised by UIC together with the Association of American Railroads (AAR), Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) and Operation Lifesaver inc. (OLI).

In 2023 (14-16 June) ILCAD and TRESPAD were kicked off by two conferences hosted by and [PKP Group Foundation in Warsaw.

In 2024 (5-7 June) ILCAD and TRESPAD conferences are co-organised by UIC and the Transportation Safety Board of Argentina (Junta de Seguridad en el Transporte = JST) in Buenos Aires.

Public targeted in 2024 : “Vulnerable users” = pedestrians, cyclists, impaired persons, elderly people, persons with reduced mobility, children, teenagers...

The themes of the 2024 ILCAD launch conference are :

  • Technology – What technologies could help to educate people, raise awareness, and ultimately prevent accidents at level crossings ?
  • Enforcement/Regulations – joint initiatives of the railways, with local authorities, police forces to encourage people to respect the highway code.
  • Community outreach – What are the best means of making people aware of the safety risks at crossings ?
