The Project :
Railway crossings are critical yet costly infrastructure elements. Many eventually deteriorate ; driving up maintenance costs, triggering operational delays and straining rail operators’ budgets.
XCROSS aims at transforming how we inspect, monitor and maintain railway crossings using cutting-edge digital tools and smarter maintenance strategies.
XCROSS will deliver :
• Fast, precise inspections using 3D laser scanning and computer vision.
• Smart digital twins to simulate wheel-rail interaction and optimise planning.
• Use of Augmented Reality (AR) and 3D printing to improve on-site maintenance.
• An early warning system to catch damage before it becomes critical.
By leveraging these technologies, XCROSS will help to optimise the lifecycle of railway crossings, reduce maintenance costs and improve efficiency across the board.
