The UIC is pleased to invite you to a safety webinar on “Resilient Railways” to be held online on 5 November 2024 from 2:00pm to 5pm CET.
Overview
Climate change is one of the greatest challenges facing humankind this century. Companies in naturally exposed regions could see a significant share of their capital destroyed if natural hazards/disasters materialise or increase, especially in the long run.
On the operational side, climate change will significantly increase the number of disruptions and breakdowns: stronger and more frequent storms can affect infrastructure, heat waves can affect rolling stock, and strong and gusty winds can move train loads. It is important not to forget other natural hazards such as earthquakes and leaves on the tracks, which increase braking distance.
All of these threats pose a challenge to railways safety and must be considered in the Safety Management System of railway operators: for example, high temperatures will affect workers and passengers, and decreasing reliability of systems will lead to more degraded operations.
UIC is committed to improving the sector’s resilience to climate change and will lead a number of projects to this end. The webinar on safety will focus on how to maintain safety performance against climate change and natural hazards.
Programme
UIC is pleased to host this webinar on resilient railways. Or rather, how the sector is working to improve its resilience in the face of climate change and other natural and non-natural hazards.
The webinar will be divided into three blocks. The first will be about a general approach with other transport modes, and a financial approach. The second one will talk about what UIC, and its members, are doing to improve their resilience to different hazards. And finally, there will be some real and recent examples of experiences in dealing with contingencies.
The webinar features 20 speakers from different backgrounds, and we at UIC hope that it will be of interest and useful to those who are also facing these challenges of maintaining safety and operations in the face of so many threats.
