This workshop, organised by the UIC Commuter Rail Transport Systems (CRTS) and Customer Experience groups (CEMP), will bring together international experts to examine current practices and explore innovative approaches across on-board services, stations, and rolling stock maintenance regarding cleaning.
1. Context:
Cleaning has become a strategic component of commuter rail operations, directly influencing passenger perception, customer experience, health and safety, and operational reliability. In the context of increasing passenger expectations, tighter operational turnarounds, and growing attention to hygiene and sustainability, railway undertakings are required to continuously adapt and modernise their cleaning practices.
Across on-board services, stations, and rolling stock maintenance facilities, operators face common challenges such as managing high passenger flows, ensuring consistent quality standards, integrating cleaning activities within constrained operational windows, and optimising costs while maintaining a high level of service. At the same time, technological innovation, new materials, digital monitoring tools, and alternative organisational models are opening new opportunities to enhance efficiency and performance.
2. Objectives:
- Showcase current cleaning practices in on-board services, stations, and rolling stock maintenance.
- Identify operational challenges and highlight opportunities to enhance efficiency, quality, and passenger satisfaction.
- Share practical case studies, tools, and technologies supporting modern cleaning operations.
- Foster dialogue and coordination among railway stakeholders to harmonise cleaning standards and procedures.
- Encourage collaboration and the exchange of best practices within the global railway community.
3. Target Audience:
- Railway operators
- Infrastructure managers
- Cleaning service providers
- Research institutions
- Industry partners
4. Expected Outcomes:
- Participants will gain a clearer and shared understanding of current cleaning practices applied to on-board services, stations, and rolling stock maintenance, including their operational constraints and performance drivers. The workshop will enable the identification of practical solutions and innovative approaches that can improve cleaning efficiency, quality, and consistency while enhancing the overall customer experience.
- The exchange of case studies and operational feedback will support benchmarking and inspire the adoption of new tools, technologies, and organisational models adapted to different network contexts. In addition, the workshop will strengthen dialogue and cooperation among international railway stakeholders, contributing to the harmonisation of approaches and the dissemination of best practices within the UIC community.
