The Role
To support the continued growth of its sustainability activities, UIC is seeking a highly motivated Senior Sustainability Advisor – EU Projects Manager to lead the development, coordination and implementation of European-funded projects supporting the sustainability transition of the rail sector.
The successful candidate will play a key role in managing international project consortia, developing funding proposals, engaging stakeholders and delivering high-impact sustainability initiatives. Current projects include ERJU SYMBIOSIS, QuieterRail and LIFE-NatureRail.
Main Mission
Lead and support the bidding for and implementation of EU-funded sustainability projects in line with the Sustainability Platform’s work programme, including initiatives such as ERJU SYMBIOSIS, QuieterRail, and LIFE-NatureRail.
Key Responsibilities
The selected candidate will:
- Manage EU-funded projects, ensuring compliance with contractual requirements, budgets, timelines, and deliverables.
- Coordinate project partners, stakeholders, and internal departments to support effective project implementation and reporting.
- Provide expertise on sustainability and environmental management topics.
- Conduct research, data analysis, and review/edit and draft technical reports, recommendations, guidelines, and project deliverables.
- Develop project proposals and support applications for European funding programmes, including ERJU, Horizon Europe, and LIFE.
- Promote synergies between EU-funded projects and departmental activities to ensure the uptake of project results.
- Prepare technical and financial reporting inputs for the European Commission and other funding bodies.
- Organise and facilitate project meetings, workshops, stakeholder consultations, and partner events.
- Contribute to communication, dissemination, and stakeholder engagement activities, including authoring scientific papers and press articles.
- Represent UIC in project consortia, conferences, seminars, and other external forums.
- Monitor relevant sustainability and rail sector developments and provide secretariat support to the Sustainability Platform.
Candidate Profile
Education and Experience
- Master’s degree (or equivalent professional experience) in Sustainability, Environmental Sciences, Engineering, Transport, or a related field.
- Minimum three years of experience in the management of EU-funded projects and proposal development.
- Demonstrated knowledge of sustainability issues and European research and innovation programmes.

- Strong project management, analytical, and organisational skills.
- Excellent communication, stakeholder engagement, and presentation abilities.
- Ability to work effectively in multicultural and international environments.
- Capacity to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
- Proactive, collaborative, and results-oriented approach.
Languages
- Excellent command of English (written and spoken).
- Knowledge of French and/or German would be considered an asset.
Additional Requirements
- Holder of a valid European work permit.
- Availability to travel internationally within Europe.
- Availability to start as soon as possible.
