RIC/A

The RIC has been an agreement on the exchange and use of passenger cars in international rail traffic since 1922.
Since then, it has evolved and has changed a multilateral contract between the signatories.

The appearance and use of unit trains in international traffic has led to a separation of this original Agreement in order to better adapt to the technical specificities of each: to the RIC Agreement for passenger cars and to the RIA Agreement for self-propelled unit from 2017. These RIC and the RIA Agreements are administered by a RIC/A Special Group and its Bureau which is part of the UIC.

The RIC and the RIA constantly adapt to the technical and legal evolution in Europe, they specify the functioning and the responsibilities of the actors.

These Agreements apply between the RU and the keepers for the reciprocal use of passenger cars or self-propelled unit used in international passenger traffic. Given the nature of passenger transport services in international rail traffic, they are based on cooperation between successive RUs in the train route, especially for the use of passenger cars or self-propelled unit.

Since its drafting, many significant and necessary amendments have been incorporated in the text that the RIC and RIA experts in working groups of the RIC/A SG have considered as relevant for the constant evolution of the railway field. All these amendments are put to a vote at the RIC or RIA General Assembly; Once approved the new amended text enters into force on January 1 of each year.
